Stump Grinding and Removal in Hamilton, ON

A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. It takes up usable yard space, creates a tripping hazard, attracts insects and fungus, and prevents you from mowing cleanly or planting in that area. Bison Tree Service grinds stumps below the soil surface using professional-grade grinders, leaving you with a level, usable area. We grind the stump and visible surface roots so the material is completely below ground, covered with the resulting mulch, and ready for grass, a garden bed, or whatever you have planned.

Why You Should Not Leave a Stump in Your Yard

Leaving a stump after tree removal creates a set of ongoing problems that get worse over time.

Pest and Insect Attraction

Decaying stumps are ideal breeding grounds for carpenter ants, termites, beetles, and other wood-boring insects. Once established, these pests can spread to nearby healthy trees and even your home.

Tripping Hazard

Stumps and surface roots are a leading cause of yard injuries, especially for children and elderly visitors. Liability for injuries on your property is your responsibility.

Sprouting and Regrowth

Many species will send up new shoots from the stump for years after the tree is removed. Managing this regrowth is tedious and costly without addressing the stump itself.

Lawn Care Difficulty

Stumps force you to mow around them, limit where you can plant, and create dead zones in your lawn. Grinding eliminates the problem completely.

How Stump Grinding Works

The process is straightforward and typically completed in under an hour for most stumps.

1

Site Assessment

We assess the stump diameter, root spread, soil conditions, and any underground utilities nearby before grinding begins.

2

Grinding

Our grinder reduces the stump and visible roots to chips, grinding 6 to 12 inches below the soil surface depending on your plans for the area.

3

Cleanup and Fill

We fill the cavity with the resulting wood chip mulch, rake the area level, and leave the site clean. The mulch will break down naturally and the area can be seeded or planted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Stump grinding uses a machine to chip the stump and visible surface roots below ground level, leaving the deeper root system to decay naturally underground. Full stump removal involves excavating the entire root system, which is more disruptive and expensive. For most residential applications, grinding is the practical and cost-effective choice.
How deep does the grinder go?
We typically grind 6 to 12 inches below the soil surface. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same location or pour a foundation, we can grind deeper. Just let us know your plans during the quote.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Grinding to the appropriate depth destroys the stump and prevents regrowth in nearly all cases. Some very vigorous species may send up occasional small shoots from the deeper roots, but these are easy to manage and stop on their own within a season or two.
Can I plant grass or a garden in the spot after grinding?
Yes. After grinding, we fill the cavity with wood chip mulch which you can rake level and seed over once it settles. The chips break down within a year or two and actually improve soil quality. For immediate planting of shrubs or a new tree, we recommend removing the mulch and backfilling with topsoil.
How long does stump grinding take?
Most residential stumps are ground in 30 to 90 minutes depending on size and location. We are in and out quickly with minimal disruption to your yard.
Is stump grinding messy?
The grinder produces wood chip mulch which stays in and around the stump cavity. We rake up any chips that spread beyond the work area and leave the site clean. There is no smoke, no chemicals, and minimal noise compared to other excavation methods.
